I had the pleasure of teaching a flower design workshop for a few of the potential residents at Sylvan Woods new 55+ community in Marlton, New Jersey. This complex is a beautiful setup of modern-style apartments to provide those who are 55+ the ability to live independently while also being involved in group activities. This is a wonderful location which provides seniors the opportunity to socialize with their neighbors and make friends through the many different activities Sylvan Woods has to offer. The wonderful coordinators at Sylvan Woods contacted me to see if I would be available to teach a floral design workshop, and of course I said yes! Seniors hold a special place in my heart. I used to be a home helper for many seniors while I was in college, and I really enjoyed the time I spent with my clients.

This workshop included fresh farm flowers (fever few, bachelor buttons, orelaya) and other complimenting blooms (pom pons, solidago, and roses). I pre-bundled each set of flowers to give to each member of the workshop.

Once everyone had their flowers, I demonstrated how to clean the leaves of the stems to prepare them for placement in the vase. The members watched two different demonstrations before starting to design in their vases. The first demonstration showed how to design the flowers as a bouquet and then place them into the vase. The second demonstration showed how to design directly into the vase. Once I finished the demonstrations, they dove right in to designing!
